About Us

History

Organized on September 27, 1898, the Mecklenburg Chapter, NSDAR, was the very first chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the state of North Carolina. Our organizing Regent, Mary Anna Morrison Jackson (widow of “Stonewall” Jackson), was the first of many women whose families were influential in Charlotte’s history.

Our chapter’s first monument was erected at Mecklenburg County’s McIntyre Farm in honor of the “Battle of the Bees,” which took place on October 3, 1780. Erected in 1901, the McIntyre Farm monument was also the first DAR monument in the state of North Carolina. Over the years, we have marked many important sites and graves throughout Mecklenburg County and beyond.

In 1949, the Mecklenburg Chapter, NSDAR, was one of several local chapters to raise funds for and oversee the restoration of the Hezekiah Alexander Rock House, which was built in 1774. In 1976, the Charlotte Museum of History opened on the Rock House grounds to be a perpetual steward of this historic site. We are proud of our ongoing relationship with the museum. Historically, a member of our chapter serves on the museum’s board of trustees.

The annual Fourth of July naturalization ceremony at the Charlotte Museum of History is an incredibly moving experience. Our chapter is honored to provide each new citizen with a gift bag that includes a copy of the United States Constitution.

The original Charter of the Mecklenburg Chapter, NSDAR, is dated September 27, 1898.

Monthly chapter meetings are held at many different venues across Charlotte.

Meetings

Our chapter meets at various venues around Charlotte at 10 a.m. on the second Thursday of the month from September through May. A typical meeting includes social time, a business meeting, a guest speaker, and a delicious but optional luncheon. Many meetings are themed based on that month’s celebrations. Guest speakers include local authors, veterans, and speakers who highlight the annual commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness, Black History Month, and Women’s History Month.

We encourage anyone interested in joining the DAR to attend one of our meetings. Please contact us for additional information.
